Channeling Creativity

Kitchen Cabinets need organizing?

I made this awhile back I just never posted it. I saw someone else had my pic on their pinterest board though and thought it was pretty cool that she liked it that much so I decided to officially post it here. Since this photo I've gotten rid of most of the plastic cups albeit a few TommeeTippee BPA free ones. I replaced them with KidBasix andLifeFactory ones but they all still have a home in these upcycled containers on our door.

To do this project you just need a few boxes in sizes that will fit inside your cabinet neatly. I used Baby MUM MUM cookie boxes and a Plum Kids Fruit snack box for the small lids box. Take the boxes and cut the tops off at angle (straight is fine but an angle gives easier access) with the taller side in the back. Secure and reenforce the box with tape or hot glue. Cover the boxes however you desire. In this picture, 4 of the boxes are painted and sealed, 1 is covered with scrapbook paper by Mod Podging it to the box. I used neon duct tape on the box just for cosmetic finishing trim so that is another option you could use. For labels, I used paint color chips that I had left over from when we remodeled the house. I cut them into strips and wrote on them, then attached them to the boxes. On the box covered with mod podge I cut letters out of a magazine to spell "cups" and glued them on then sealed them.

To attach the boxes to the cabinet door, first you need to test your placement. The boxes should be shallow- deep enough to fit the cups but shallow enough that they can fit flush against the shelves inside and still allow the door to close properly. If possible, place your boxes where they will not press against the internal shelves. I used Command strips to attach the boxes and Command Velcro for the heavier box of cups. The Command strips can be removed easily and leave no residue behind to damage the doors.

You can do this inside all your doors for added storage space and to organize small items like Tea packets, straws, baby food, etc. Happy Organizing!

Upcycle Box Fun

January 21, 2013

I think I've mentioned this before.. but I love to repurpose things and give them new life in our home to avoid waste. Sometimes it drives my darling husband insane and sometimes I think he couldn't possibly love me any more than he does because he adores how creative I can be.

I REALLY dislike clutter in our home (anywhere really) so I make a conscious effort to be careful about what we bring into our home. It is rather small and while we are still deciding if we will do a large addition or rent it out and buy a larger home, I don't have the space to be untidy. One thing I have a hard time with is toys other people give my kids. I try to be polite but it annoys me to no end when people buy cheap, trashy full of lead paint toys and give them to my kids just so they can say they gave a gift. I much prefer they give a card or nothing at all honestly. I spend more time trying to get rid of the junk toys that inevitably end up in a drawer someplace and forgotten as quickly as they were given.

With Lia I made the decision that I was not going to repeat the same cycle so I dispose of the junk as soon as it is given and only keep things she will play with that are healthy for her. Being that she goes to doctors' offices so frequently she gets a collection of "treasure box" toys. Now, you may be thinking they are exactly the kind of cheap toys I am referring to... but nope! Her team at CF clinic is so awesome they actually have play-worthy toys in their treasure box. In fact, Lia's very first babydoll came from the RN coordinator at clinic  from her treasure box. Lia loved the doll so much that we began buying her one every time we went to Target and she quickly amassed a small Army of dolls. I've placed the dolls and her growing puppet collection in a variety of containers to keep them organized but they always end up in a basket or box that Lia steals from another room and leaves in the living room. I've been waiting to get a good sized box that I could convert into a colorful toybox to hold her dolls and such in the living room without it looking out of place.

Thankfully my recent Ecomom order provided me with the perfect box for the job so yesterday I go busy and let the kids help me make the boxes. The kids picked a few matching/themed scrapbook pages to use and I Mod Podged them onto the box. Instead of my usual ribbon trim my oldest son suggested I use his favorite blue duct tape for trim. Since it matched I obliged him. The end result is pretty cute and we solved 2 problems- a place to keep her dolls and avoiding waste! In the past I have purchase the Martha Stewart collapsible containers that are almost the exact size of my new upcycled boxes so this was a great project to save money as well.

Have you ever up-cycled something? I challenge you to re-purpose at least 1 thing this week and eliminate that small amount of waste. Have fun and let me know what you come up with!
